 What is lignocellulose?

Lignocellulose is plant fibre. Wood chips, straw and reed consist for up to 90% out of lignocellulose. It is made up of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. Cellulose consists of sugar molecules such as glucose, hemicellulose and cellulose  protected against break down by lignin. Lignocellulose is therefore hard to break down.                             

 What are primary, secondary and tertiary by-products?

Primary by-products originate in the field, examples are crop residues such as sugar beet tops, straw and tops and branches from tree felling. Secondary by-products originate later in the production chain. Examples include sugar beet pulp, sawdust and offcuts and sugar cane bagasse. You sometimes have other competing uses such as local energy production for the mill or paper making. Tertiary by-products are collected as waste. Examples include household organic wastes, used pallets and demolition wood.
