The textile industry has a lot of potential to lever change. To fully understand this potential, we need to take a step back and understand how the prevailing economic system is supporting the overconsumption of textiles. Our current economic system is built on a culture of consumption that presupposes infinite use of raw materials, driving an incessant expansion in the production and consumption of textiles, ultimately contributing to unsustainable practices in the industry. In this video, sustainable textiles researcher Dieuwertje de Wagenaar discusses the concept of continuous growth and why it’s important to decouple resource use in the textile sector.
