6.4 Growing medium and ground cover for horticulture (fibres)
Mats made of hemp fibres are very suitable as a growing substrate in horticulture. The fibres have good water retention capacity, and the open structure ensures air supply to the roots.[1] These mats are particularly suitable for shortly growing crops. And also as ground cover to suppress weed and moss growth.[2]
By needle punching of the fibres, no binder is needed; the mat is therefore 100% hemp fibre. As a result, the mats are also fully biodegradable in soil and composting.
