In this knowledge clip, we will tell you all about advanced biofuels: what are they? How is bioethanol being produced and what is being meant by so called first- and second generation ethanol processes? Furthermore, we will introduce you the most important challenges and current developments for advanced biofuels.

After listening to this knowledge clip, you will be able to answer the following questions:

. What are first generation biofuels feedstocks and what are second generation biofuels feedstocks?
  • 1st generation feedstocks: grains, like corn or sugar cane
  • 2nd generation feedstocks: lignocellulosic biomasses like wood
What is the right order of the following processes within the bioethanol process? FERMENTATION, ENZYMATIC HYDROLYSIS, SEPARATION, PURIFICATION (DESTILLATION)

Enzymatic hydrolysis -> fermentation -> separation -> purification (distillation)
