In this knowledge clip, we will tell you more about the need of the shift from fossil fuels to renewable fuels. Fossil fuels are still dominating the transport sector, leading to increasing CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere. We need to shift from adding extra carbon to the atmosphere by burning fossil fuels to a balanced carbon budget, and that new carbon needs come from a renewable carbon source instead of fossils. We will answer questions as why are renewable fuels so important in reducing CO2-intensity and in which ways can we prevent fossil carbon emission in the transport sector?

 How can we reduce the emissions from the transport sector?

  • It concerns an approach of reducing energy demand by e.g. reducing the number of kilometres, electrification as much as possible, and liquid and gaseous fuels based on waste and residue flows

In this knowledge clip we will teach you how renewable fuels are made and in which ways they contribute to reducing climate impact of the transport sector. There are different ways in which fuels can produced, depending on the type of feedstock and the wanted fuel. We will answer questions as what positive impacts renewable fuels have and in which ways renewable fuels are currently being produced.

After listening to this knowledge clip, you will be able to answer the following questions:

 Mention 3 steps how renewable fuels contribute to reducing the climate impact

  • Advanced biofuels are made from waste and residues. Therefore, there are little to no greenhouse gas emissions during production of the feedstocks. The climate impact of the renewable fuels is considerably lower than fossil fuels. Moreover, you add value to these otherwise not-used streams.

  • A shift to a full electric transport sector takes time. On the short term, renewable fuels are needed to reduce climate impacts of the transport sector. You can convert feedstock into renewable fuels that are ready to use in the combustion engines of existing vehicles on the road.

  • Producing renewable fuels operates within system boundaries (natural carbon cycle): during combustion the carbon that was absorbed during growth of plants is returned to the atmosphere. Plants grow and absorb CO2 from the atmosphere. This we call the natural carbon cycle which does not add new carbon to the atmosphere.


 In which two ways can renewable liquid or gaseous fuels be made?

  • Based on renewable electricity and a carbon molecule

  • Using biomass (waste/residues) as feedstock to produce a fuel
