Electricity plays a vital role in modern greenhouses, providing power for various functions that are essential for maintaining optimal growing conditions. Next to artificial illumination, which requires by far the most electricity, the electrification of greenhouses increases the electricity consumption. Examples are active cooling and dehumidifcation and the use of heat pumps.

Mismatch between electricity demand and electricity supply from renewable sources like wind and solar is a common challenge in the renewable energy industry, and it's primarily due to the intermittent and variable nature of wind and the seasonal dependency of solar. Both sources are not always available when electricity demand is highest.
