12.5.4.2 The success of Coq du Faso (2024)

A breeding program as described above is being carried out in Burkina Faso in collaboration with Hendrix Genetics, called Coq du Faso. The animals of the seventh generation have now been penned up in this breeding program. 

From generation 1 to 6 weight at 12 weeks increased from 719 to 903 grams, the hen-housed production in 55 weeks increased from 39 to 73 eggs, the hen-day production in 55 weeks increased from 41 to 88 eggs and the outcome percentage from 71 to 81. 

There is a huge progress in weight at 12 weeks, egg production and hatching percentage. And egg weight has increased and broodiness has decreased. These improvements are due to genetic progress and better management. 

This example proves that a simple breeding program can work well under local conditions in Africa. The presence of poultry in the immediate vicinity (at least 500 meters) must be avoided. A good standard biosecurity program must be implemented to prevent diseases such as Avian Influenza.
