As a fifth application whole genome sequencing is introduced. Whole genome sequencing (also known as full genome sequencing, complete genome sequencing, or entire genome sequencing) is a process that determines the complete DNA sequence of an organism's genome. This entails sequencing all of an organism's chromosomal DNA as well as DNA contained in the mitochondria. This technique is used in research settings, but practical use in selection may be expected as it opens the possibility to select directly for favourable alleles of QTL’s and the opportunity to detect and study rare alleles (alleles with a low frequency).
